ASCENT

Learn about our R&D initiatives to bring high-performing ASCENT monopropellant to viability.

Why ASCENT?

ASCENT (Advanced Spacecraft Energetic Non-Toxic) is a monopropellant developed by the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).

Benefits of ASCENT vs. Hydrazine:

- 50% superior impulse density relative to state-of-the-art monopropellants allowing for more mission with equivalent system size

- Novel 'multi-mode' propellant for both chemical & electric propulsion providing high-thrust and high-efficiency within a single simplified and dynamically tunable system

- Long-term storable with improved spacecraft thermal management, making previously impractical missions possible

- Safe handling and significantly reduced time and cost for ground integration and propellant loading enabling tactically responsive launches and high-volume rideshare missions

- Simplified shipping, storage & handling (DOT-certified) reducing logistical costs and enabling shipment and storage of fueled spacecraft

Development Campaigns

Benchmark has been selected by the AFRL to explore the full potential of ASCENT and bring this hydrazine-alternative propellant to market.

Development campaigns include:
- Thrusters from 22 to 100 newtons with pathways to larger and smaller thrusters
- System architecture and design
- Model-based systems engineering
- Rapid propellant loading capabilities in support of tactically responsive space
